The laws of Starbucks

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

I am declaring that Starbucks becomes a designated foriegn country with its own unique laws that override U.S. laws the second you walk through the door — the laws are few and simple.

  1. Starbuckians will be fully prepared to answer the question “What can I get you?” the second they are asked. If citizens are [...]

A proud moment in any man’s life . . .

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Today, I took a screwdriver to my computer housing and opened her up. Today, I viewed her innards and saw a sea of circuits and wires—things that frightened me. Today, I took a stick of memory and gently snapped it exactly where the instruction manual told me to, I did not force. Today, I replaced [...]

RE: Let’s do some business!

Dear G.W.:

I’d like to throw my name in the hat to run the multiple U.S. Ports that were so recently being considered by the folks in Dubai. I bring many qualifications to the table, for example, I currently run a business that is very similar to running international port commerce and [...]

I saw this post on Cartoon Brew, and it piqued my interest since I saw his work (and him) up close and personal a few years back at the Autry’s California Pottery exhibition. I also happen to know that he attended Otis (my alma mater). What I didn’t know is what a wonderful human being [...]

I’ve always wanted to be 14 ft. tall

Monday, February 13th, 2006

If you’re driving around L.A. and you see these red and yellow billboards advertising a popular BBQ competition—well, that BBQ chef would be me. I designed the logo for this event, that, and my personal passion for good barbeque (Kansas City!) convinced the client that I might be a good poster boy for “stuffin’-your-face-family-fun!”

Fun fact: [...]

The Imagineers at Disney used to do stuff like this all the time at the studio, just for fun (when Disney used to be fun). When Thumbtack Press builds it’s corporate headquarters I’m decorating like this. Click the image above for more mindbending schtuff!

Bob Dob at La Luz De Jesus

Friday, January 6th, 2006

Thumbtack Press artist Bob Dob is part of an amazing two-man show (with Mark Bodnar) opening tonight at La Luz De Jesus in Hollywood. I got to see a sneak peak last night and all I can say is “damn, Bob’s good, and getting gooder!”

If you have the means I highly recommend that you buy [...]

I had a business meeting today - lots of notetaking and lots of blah blah blah blah. I get back to my studio and toss my yellow legal notepad next to my printer; it’s covered with doodles - as usual. In the bottom left-hand corner - in my handwriting - are the words:

“Roasted Tricleptosaurus,”

I actually [...]

Today was a good day

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

I spent an entire day with my son. We shared a bagel. We walked in the park. We both lay in the grass and pointed out the birds and squirrels to each other. We laughed. I gave him a bath, kissed his sweet face, and tucked him into bed.

Then, at midnight, I launched Thumbtack Press. www.thumbtackpress.com

Erik Swanson, Artist, Prophet?

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

The inset photo above was on the front page of today’s LA Times (Rick Loomis), it shows the aftermath of Hurricane Rita. The Thumbtack Press image by Erik Swanson, Floodgates of the Soul, was painted long before this last hurricane season. We have added three new images by Erik as well in his section. www.thumbtackpress.com

This typifies why the internets rule and every other form of media sucks. The Beastie Boys have released just their vocal tracks for downloading and have asked the fans to remix at will. I took a track called Oh Word? and laid down this white-boy-suburban-gainfully-employed-cracker-ass joint. (first attempt, don’t laugh!)

I’m adding “Collaborated with the Beastie [...]
