Jasper Rietman's Narratives

Thumbtack’s newest artist, Jasper Rietman, clearly has an interest in (and skill for) storytelling. Where he shines is his ability to make the duration of a story that happens over time really become something that the eye can see all at once, in an image, and that your brain can have that I get it response to. Most of his work sort of floats somewhere in a comic-illustration-drawing cloud, and not because he can’t commit to one; he’s just managed to blend the most intriguing aspects of each medium into a style and voice that’s all his own.

Pulling from such a well-established medium like comics makes it familiar to the viewer, but Jasper’s refresh on it – no text bubbles necessary – gives you that actual, real moment of surprise, whether it’s in humor, something revealed, or just plain smart.

Whether it’s a surprise ending of sorts (like TRI/P 97 above), or a bit part, video game inspired play on perspective (like Tool, also above), so much of his work is just satisfying to look at, even in its obvious desire to catch you off-guard. Narrative can be tricky to take beyond getting the viewer to look at once and read, but Jasper manages to do that and (gently) forces you to imagine more to it.
